About the artist…

Tim Lovell is a contemporary painter, photographer, and filmmaker who lives and works in Los Angeles, California.  Tim was born in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he studied art under the tutelage of his father and after receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Northern Iowa, he began working on feature films as a scenic painter and production designer in New York City.  Tim has exhibited his artwork in many national venues since then, most recently at The Magdalene Centre for Women’s Studies and Solar de Cahuenga – both in the Los Angeles area.  Tim’s art is included in the permanent collection at the Ames Octagon Center in Ames, Iowa, and has received the National Kodak Merit Award for his photography.  His work consists mostly of a fusion between classical and modern nudes, each varying in their symbolic language and style.

Artist Statement

I believe the origins of my work have been created through a lifelong pursuit and understanding of the relationships between form, style, and other aspects of life intimately connected with the artistic medium.  Undoubtedly, a work of art is not executed as an end in itself, but rather as part of the whole process.

I imagine that an image is a living incarnation with several senses, all varying according to the context within which they are presented.  These senses take on visual, moral, or even social criteria, each creating a unique perspective.

The human form incorporates nuances that cannot be easily characterized. In each case the visual language becomes fundamental in the elimination of complicated barriers such as those separating art and theory. My work is an inquiry into the nature of art itself and any result or manifestation must be regarded as simply that.
